SAMP/T Air Defense System
WesternSAMP/T Mamba (Aster 30)
The SAMP/T (Sol-Air Moyenne Portee/Terrestre), known in service as Mamba, is a Franco-Italian medium-to-long-range air defense system firing Aster 30 missiles. France and Italy jointly delivered SAMP/T batteries to Ukraine starting in 2023 to defend against ballistic and cruise missiles. It is Europe's primary non-US alternative to the American Patriot system.
Primary Role
Defense of cities and infrastructure against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and aircraft
First documented use in Ukraine: 2023

β Strengths
- β’360-degree coverage with vertically launched Aster 30 missiles
- β’Capable against ballistic missiles, not just aircraft and cruise missiles
- β’European-made β diversifies supply beyond US Patriot
- β’Long engagement range protecting large areas
β Limitations
- β’Small number of batteries delivered
- β’Aster 30 interceptor production and stocks are limited
- β’High-value system targeted by Russian ballistic and drone strikes
Notable Use
SAMP/T gave Ukraine a European-made long-range interceptor capable of engaging ballistic missiles, complementing the US Patriot. Ukraine reported using SAMP/T against Russian missile threats, and France and Italy worked to supply additional Aster interceptors as stocks were drawn down.
Ukraine War Context
France and Italy delivered SAMP/T batteries and trained Ukrainian crews, integrating the system into the layered air-defense network protecting Kyiv and other cities. Interceptor supply has been a constraint, with European production of Aster missiles scaled up to sustain Ukrainian operations.
