Understanding Regional Impact

Eastern Ukraine (Donbas)

The Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts have been the epicenter of fighting since 2014. Cities like Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Mariupol have seen some of the most intense urban combat since World War II. The region remains heavily contested.

Southern Front

Kherson was the only regional capital captured by Russia, later liberated in November 2022. Zaporizhzhia Oblast hosts Europe's largest nuclear plant and remains a key frontline area.

Northern Regions

Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy oblasts were invaded in February 2022 but liberated by April. They continue to face missile, drone, and occasional artillery attacks from Belarus and Russia.

Rear Areas

Central and western regions face periodic missile and drone strikes targeting infrastructure, military installations, and sometimes civilian areas. No region is completely safe from long-range attacks.
