NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System)
WesternNational Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System
NASAMS is a distributed, ground-based air defense system jointly developed by Raytheon and Kongsberg Defense. It uses the AIM-120 AMRAAM missile (also used on F-16s) to engage cruise missiles, aircraft, and drones at medium range. Ukraine received at least eight NASAMS batteries from the US, Norway, and other allies, becoming one of the most consequential Western air defense deliveries.
Primary Role
Point/area defense against cruise missiles, Shahed drones, aircraft, and ballistic missiles (limited)
First documented use in Ukraine: 2022-11-01
Specifications
| Range | ~40 km (AIM-120C-7), extendable to 167 km with AIM-120D3 |
| Altitude | Up to 15,000 m |
| Missiles per launcher | 6 (AMRAAM canisters) |
| Reaction time | <9 seconds |
| Targets simultaneously | 72 tracks (radar) |
| Countries | US / Norway (Kongsberg) |
β Strengths
- β’Uses common AIM-120 AMRAAM β interchangeable with F-16 stocks
- β’Networked fire control β can receive targeting data from multiple radar sources
- β’Highly effective against cruise missiles and manned aircraft
- β’Mobile and dispersed β harder to target than fixed SAM sites
- β’Proven operational record in Ukraine (high intercept rate)
β Limitations
- β’Limited effectiveness vs. hypersonic missiles (Kinzhal)
- β’Complex logistics requiring Western AMRAAM resupply
- β’Not designed for ballistic missile defense (unlike Patriot PAC-3)
- β’Radar can be spoofed by EW systems if not properly positioned
Notable Use
Ukraine's NASAMS batteries achieved a reported 100% intercept rate in early engagements against Russian cruise missiles in November 2022. They have since been central to Kyiv's air defense umbrella, downing Kalibr and Kh-101 missiles that previously struck Ukrainian cities.
Ukraine War Context
The US announced its first two NASAMS batteries for Ukraine in June 2022, with subsequent deliveries from Norway, Netherlands, Spain, and elsewhere. As of 2025, Ukraine operates 8+ batteries. NASAMS forms the mid-tier of Ukraine's layered air defense alongside Patriot (high-tier) and Gepard/L-70 (short-range).
