MIM-104 Patriot (PAC-3)
WesternPatriot Advanced Capability-3
The Patriot PAC-3 is a long-range surface-to-air missile system capable of intercepting aircraft, cruise missiles, theater ballistic missiles, and — with limitations — hypersonic missiles. Ukraine received Patriot batteries from the United States, Germany, and the Netherlands, making it the most capable air defense system in Ukraine's arsenal. A single Ukrainian Patriot battery famously shot down a Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missile in May 2023.
Primary Role
Strategic air defense: intercept of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, hypersonic glide vehicles, and aircraft at high altitude and long range
First documented use in Ukraine: 2023-04-17

✓ Strengths
- •Highest-capability air defense system in Ukraine
- •Proven record against ballistic missiles and even Kinzhal
- •Extremely accurate — hit-to-kill PAC-3 interceptor
- •Networked with other radar systems for extended detection range
⚠ Limitations
- •Extremely expensive: ~$4M per PAC-3 interceptor missile
- •Complex to operate — requires months of crew training
- •Limited number of missiles per battery (only ~32 shots)
- •Radar and launcher are high-value targets for Russian strikes
- •Not designed for saturation attacks by large drone swarms
Notable Use
On May 4, 2023, a Ukrainian Patriot battery intercepted a Russian Kh-47 Kinzhal hypersonic missile — the first confirmed shoot-down of a hypersonic missile in combat. Russia subsequently targeted the Patriot battery with multiple strikes, damaging one launcher before it was withdrawn for repair.
Ukraine War Context
The US approved the first Patriot transfer in January 2023 after months of Ukrainian requests. Germany provided additional batteries. Ukraine operates 3–5 Patriot batteries primarily protecting Kyiv and key western cities. Each battery is a high-value target; Russia specifically allocated Kinzhal and Iskander strikes to neutralize them.
