Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank
WesternLeopard 2A4 / 2A5 / 2A6
The Leopard 2 is a German-designed main battle tank considered among the best MBTs in the world. After lengthy deliberations, Germany authorized partner nations to transfer Leopard 2 to Ukraine in January 2023, followed by German Leopard 2A6 deliveries. In the 2023 Zaporizhzhia counteroffensive, some Leopard 2A4 and A6 tanks were destroyed, triggering debate about MBT survivability against modern AT threats.

Notable Use
During Ukraine's 2023 counteroffensive, some Leopard 2 tanks were destroyed primarily by mines (not Russian tanks), triggering debates about engineer breaching assets being needed. The 2A6 version performed better due to improved armor. Germany committed to long-term platform support and announced a Leopard 2 upgrade program for Ukraine.
Ukraine War Context
Ukraine received ~90 Leopard 2 tanks from Germany, Canada, Portugal, Spain, Norway, and other nations. They form the backbone of Ukraine's armored reserve alongside M1 Abrams. Losses occurred primarily to mines and Lancet drones rather than tank-on-tank combat.
