The M1 Abrams is the United States' main battle tank, featuring a 120mm smooth-bore gun, Chobham composite armor, and a 1,500 hp turbine engine. The US committed to supplying 31 M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in January 2023, with deliveries in September 2023. The version supplied uses depleted uranium removed and uses alternative armor to protect classified information.

Notable Use
Ukraine's M1A1 Abrams tanks saw action in October–November 2023 near Avdiivka. After several tanks were destroyed by FPV drones and Lancet loitering munitions, Ukraine temporarily withdrew them from the front in early 2024 to protect them from drone threats — demonstrating how cheap drones can threaten expensive Western tanks.
Ukraine War Context
The 31 M1A1 Abrams supplied to Ukraine were a modified variant without depleted uranium armor inserts. Some tanks were lost to drone attacks and had to be withdrawn for modified tactics. The US is developing additional countermeasures for drone threats against Abrams.
