M777 Lightweight Howitzer
WesternM777 Ultra-lightweight Field Howitzer
The M777 is a 155mm towed howitzer made by BAE Systems. It uses titanium and aluminum construction to achieve a weight of just 4,218 kg β roughly half that of comparable steel artillery. The US, Canada, Australia, and other allies supplied M777 to Ukraine beginning in spring 2022, where it proved crucial for matching Russian artillery range.
Primary Role
Counter-battery fire, suppression, indirect fire support for infantry operations
First documented use in Ukraine: 2022-04

Notable Use
M777 with Excalibur GPS-guided rounds proved highly effective for precision strikes against Russian artillery and command posts at ranges exceeding Ukraine's Soviet-era artillery. However, Russia's Lancet drones have destroyed significant numbers of M777 units near front lines.
Ukraine War Context
Ukraine received 200+ M777 systems from the US, Canada, Australia, and other partners. They were critical during the counteroffensives of 2022. By 2024, losses to Russian Lancet drones and counter-battery fire had become a concern, and Western allies continued resupply.
