PzH 2000 Howitzer
WesternPanzerhaubitze 2000
The PzH 2000 (Panzerhaubitze 2000) is a German self-propelled tracked howitzer considered among the most capable artillery systems in the world. Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy supplied PzH 2000 to Ukraine from 2022. Its automatic loading system allows a burst rate of 3 rounds in 9 seconds, and it can fire 10 rounds per minute sustained.
Primary Role
Heavy fire support, counter-battery, sustained long-range fires
First documented use in Ukraine: 2022-07

✓ Strengths
- •Automatic loader — 3-person crew can sustain 10 rpm
- •MRSI capability — multiple rounds arrive simultaneously
- •Armor protection for the crew unlike towed artillery
- •One of the longest-ranging non-rocket artillery systems
⚠ Limitations
- •Very heavy (55 tonnes) — limited by bridges and soft terrain
- •Complex system requiring specialized maintenance
- •High operating cost
Notable Use
PzH 2000 is capable of "Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact" (MRSI) — firing multiple rounds at different trajectories so they all land simultaneously on a target. This maximizes damage. It is one of the few artillery systems that can match or exceed Russian Koalitsiya-SV in performance.
Ukraine War Context
Germany, Netherlands, and Italy collectively supplied ~53 PzH 2000 systems to Ukraine. They require more maintenance than Soviet-era artillery but provide far superior range and precision. Production of spare parts remains a challenge, limiting operational numbers.
