Understanding the Geographic Context
Frontline Dynamics
The front line stretches approximately 1,200 km from the Russian border near Kharkiv, through the Donbas region, to the occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts. Fighting intensity varies by sector, with the heaviest combat in Donetsk Oblast.
Strike Patterns
Russian forces conduct strikes deep into Ukrainian territory using cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and Iranian-made Shahed drones. Major cities like Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, and Dnipro are frequently targeted despite being far from the front.
Occupied Territories
Russia currently occupies approximately 18% of Ukraine's internationally recognized territory, including Crimea (annexed 2014), most of Luhansk Oblast, significant parts of Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson oblasts. The front has remained relatively static since late 2022.
Humanitarian Impact
Areas near the front line face regular shelling and evacuation orders. The civilian population in frontline towns has been severely reduced, with cities like Avdiivka and Bakhmut nearly completely destroyed.
