Armed with a 20mm autocannon, it provides protected mobility and fire support to Ukrainian infantry.

Notable Use
The January 2023 decision to send Marders, announced together with US Bradleys and French AMX-10 RCs, marked a turning point in Western willingness to provide armored fighting vehicles. Marders equipped several Ukrainian mechanized units for the 2023 counteroffensive.
Ukraine War Context
Germany supplied dozens of Marder 1A3s and pledged further batches, fielding them in mechanized brigades alongside Bradley and CV90 vehicles. The Marder's protection and 20mm cannon support infantry assaults, though its older design offers less firepower than newer IFVs.
