Drone Warfare — Ukraine War Tracker
The Russia-Ukraine war has become the first large-scale drone war in history. Russia deploys Iranian Shahed kamikaze drones and Russian Lancet precision munitions. Ukraine responds with FPV drones, Bayraktar TB2s, domestically-built strike drones, and Magura sea drones that have devastated the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
Drone Systems — Both Sides
Shahed-136 / "Geranium-2"
Kamikaze / Loitering Munition — Iran (Shahed-136); Russia names it "Geranium-2"
Russia imported from Iran, later began domestic production. Characteristic lawn-mower engine sound. Typically launched in swarms at night. Ukraine intercepts ~70–80% but surviving drones cause significant infrastructure damage. Cheap ($20,000–50,000 each) vs expensive interceptors.
Lancet-3
Loitering Munition (precision strike) — Russia (ZALA Aero)
Most effective Russian drone system; destroys Western-supplied artillery at significant rate. Operates via optical tracking with a loitering phase. Has destroyed HIMARS vehicles, M777, Panzerhaubitze 2000, and radar systems. Russia accelerated production throughout 2023–2024.
Orlan-10
ISR / Reconnaissance — Russia (Special Technology Center)
Russia's primary tactical reconnaissance drone. Used to direct artillery fire. Ukraine has shot down thousands; Russians rapidly replace them. Often carries mobile phone SIM card for data transmission — leading to many being compromised.
Shahed-131 / KAS-04
Kamikaze drone (smaller) — Iran-derived, Russian-produced
Smaller sibling to Shahed-136. Used alongside larger Shaheds in mixed swarm attacks.
Zala KYB
Loitering munition — Russia (ZALA Aero)
Earlier Russian loitering munition, largely superseded by Lancet-3 which is more capable.
FPV Drone (various)
First-Person View attack drone — Ukraine (commercially sourced, modified)
Ukraine announced a "million drones" program in 2024. FPV drones cost $400–1,000 each and destroy vehicles costing hundreds of thousands. Most game-changing tactical drone category; both sides now mass-produce. Ukraine leads in FPV volume and pilot quality. Russia rapidly catching up in production.
Bayraktar TB2
MALE (Medium Altitude Long Endurance) UCAV — Turkey (Baykar)
Highly effective in early war (2022) before Russia deployed more effective air defense. Destroyed hundreds of Russian vehicles in initial weeks. Operational frequency declined after MANPADS/radar adaptation. Famous "Bayraktar" song became war anthem. Still used selectively.
Punisher (UJ-22)
Fixed-wing attack/ISR drone — Ukraine (UA Dynamics)
Used in deep strikes into Russian territory including Saratov, Engels airbase area. Small radar cross-section makes it hard to detect. Contributes to broader campaign to strike Russian strategic assets beyond front.
R-18 Octocopter
Heavy-lift attack drone — Ukraine (Army of Drones)
Ukraine's domestically developed heavy frontline drone. Used to drop anti-personnel and anti-armor munitions with high precision. Crowdfunded by Ukrainian citizens.
Magura V5
Unmanned Surface Vehicle (sea drone) — Ukraine (GUR / Military Intelligence)
Sunk multiple Russian warships including Caesar Kunikov, Ivanovets, Sergei Kotov. Operates autonomously and via remote control. Cost ~$300,000 each vs warships worth tens of millions. Has reshaped Black Sea naval dynamics.

How Drones Changed the War
FPV Revolution
FPV ("first-person view") attack drones cost $400–1,000 and destroy vehicles worth $100,000–$3M. This asymmetric equation has made tank offensives extremely costly. Both sides are now racing to produce millions annually.
Counter-Drone Challenge
Traditional air defense is too expensive for mass drone threats. Ukraine uses mobile electronic warfare (EW) jammers, gun trucks, drone-on-drone intercepts, and laser-guided munitions to destroy Shaheds cost-effectively.
Deep Strike Access
Ukraine's fixed-wing drones have struck targets deep inside Russia — oil refineries, airfields, fuel depots, and ammunition stores — without using ballistic missiles. This ongoing campaign degrades Russian war production.
Naval Drone Precedent
The Magura V5 sea drone has sunk major warships for ~$300,000 each. This represents the first time unmanned surface vessels have sunk major warships in combat history. Sets precedent for future naval warfare globally.
