Black Sea Naval War
Ukraine has inflicted massive losses on Russia's Black Sea Fleet using Neptune anti-ship missiles, Storm Shadow cruise missiles, and domestically-developed Magura V5 sea drones. By 2024, Ukraine claimed effective control of the northwestern Black Sea despite having no traditional navy.
Confirmed Russian Naval Losses
Moskva (Moskva-class cruiser)
Guided-missile cruiser β flagship Black Sea Fleet
Sinking of the flagship was the largest naval loss for Russia since the Falklands War (1982). The Moskva was the command ship of the Black Sea Fleet. 27 confirmed crew deaths; ~500 crew evacuated. Russia claimed "fire and ammunition explosion." NATO allies confirmed missile strike. Russia's Black Sea Fleet never fully recovered operationally.
Saratov (Alligator-class landing ship)
Large landing ship
Struck while docked at Berdyansk port during early invasion. Also damaged: Orsk and Novocherkassk landing ships in the same attack. Fire burned for two days. Russia lost significant amphibious assault capacity at a critical point in the invasion.
Novocherkassk (Ropucha-class landing ship)
Large landing ship
Struck while docked at Feodosia port in Crimea. Ship sank after secondary explosions. 74 killed according to Ukrainian intelligence. Strike demonstrated continued Ukrainian ability to hit naval assets in Crimean ports.
Minsk (Ropucha-class landing ship)
Large landing ship
Struck in drydock at Sevastopol alongside submarine Rostov-on-Don. Both put out of action. Russia's submarine fleet capability in Black Sea reduced. First successful strike on major naval base using deep-strike cruise missiles.
Rostov-on-Don (Kilo-class submarine)
Diesel-electric submarine β Kilo-class
Struck in same attack as Minsk. The Rostov-on-Don was a key asset for Kalibr cruise missile launches. Severely damaged while in drydock, removing it from operational service for an extended period.
Caesar Kunikov (Ropucha-class landing ship)
Large landing ship
Hit by Ukrainian naval drones off Crimea. Sank after taking multiple drone hits. First major warship sunk purely by sea drones. Demonstrated effectiveness of Ukraine's low-cost MUSV (Maritime Unmanned Surface Vessel) strategy.
Sergei Kotov (Project 22160 patrol vessel)
Patrol vessel
Attacked and sunk by multiple Ukrainian Magura V5 sea drones in Kerch Strait area. Video released by Ukraine GUR showing the attack. Part of Ukraine's ongoing campaign to neutralize Russian Black Sea Fleet capabilities near Crimea.
Ivanovets (Tarantul-class missile corvette)
Missile corvette
Sunk in Lake Donuzlav, Crimea, by Ukrainian sea drone attack. Corvette became trapped and sunk after drone hit. Ukraine's GUR published drone footage. Each Tarantul carries Moskit anti-ship missiles β significant capability removed.
Olenegorsky Gornyak (Ropucha-class LST)
Large landing ship
Struck off Novorossiysk, first significant sea drone attack in that port. Ship survived but heavily damaged. Demonstrated Ukraine's ability to project naval drone force far beyond Crimea.

Ukraine announces effective operational control of the northwestern Black Sea. Grain exports resume via temporary "humanitarian corridor" without formal Russian agreement.
Impact: Ukraine exports 24M+ tonnes of grain via new corridor despite Russian opposition.
Strategic Context
Neptune Anti-Ship Missile
Ukraine's domestically-developed R-360 Neptune β based on Soviet Kh-35 design β sank the Moskva. Range ~280 km, subsonic. Ukraine accelerated production after invasion.
Magura V5 Sea Drones
Ukraine's naval drone: ~5.5m long, ~200 kg warhead, ~1,000 km range. Operated by GUR (Military Intelligence). Has sunk multiple warships at a fraction of their cost. Exported concept globally.
Black Sea Fleet Withdrawal
By mid-2024, Russia effectively ceased basing major warships in Sevastopol, relocating to Novorossiysk. This eliminates most of the fleet's operational relevance for the war.
Grain Corridor Impact
Ukraine exported 33M+ tonnes of grain under the 2022β2023 UN deal, and resumed grain corridors unilaterally in 2023β2024. Black Sea shipping is now largely re-established.
