Mykola Balan
Lieutenant General Mykola Balan has commanded the Ukrainian Air Force since 2020, leading Ukraine's air defense efforts throughout the full-scale Russian invasion. Under his command, Ukraine's air force — despite being heavily outnumbered — has successfully intercepted thousands of Russian cruise missiles, Shahed drones, and ballistic missiles, adapting Western-supplied Patriot, NASAMS, IRIS-T, and Gepard air defense systems into an integrated layered defense network.

Balan oversaw the unprecedented integration of multiple NATO air defense systems into a coherent Ukrainian defense architecture. His force successfully intercepted major salvo attacks, including the November 2024 mass strike that involved 188+ drones and missiles. The F-16 deliveries from Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands in 2024 marked a watershed in Ukraine's air combat capabilities under his leadership.
