Andrei Mordvichev
Colonel General Andrei Mordvichev commanded Russia's 8th Guards Combined Arms Army (headquartered in Novocherkassk), which bore primary responsibility for operations in southern Ukraine including the siege of Mariupol and the drive along the southern coast. He was promoted and awarded Hero of Russia for the Mariupol operation. In 2023–2024 he commanded the "Group South" forces in the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk directions.

Under his Group South command in 2024, Russian forces conducted the grinding offensive that eventually captured Avdiivka in February 2024.
